I recently purchased the Braun Free Control #1775 electric shaver and I can honestly say that it shaves as close as my old reliable Gillette Sensor razor. I’ve tried other Braun models costing up to 5 times the price of the Free Control and none of them shaves as close. I think the secret is that is uses just one large cutting block which is heavier and closer cutting than those 2 headed models. Also, the floating foil head is MUCH THINNER than the more expensive Braun models. It floats up and down on your face, and the foil itself is very flexible so it compresses onto the cutter and you barely have to press the shaver to your face. For $35. this shaver out performs $150. models and is an unbelievable value. Don’t waste your money on anything more expensive, they don’t get any closer than this!!!

This is the first electric razor I have ever owned and all I have to say is – WOW! Why didn’t I buy one of these YEARS ago?
For those who have never used an electric razor, allow me to note a few things. I’ve been using it for about 2 or 3 weeks now, so I feel comfortable reporting on the performance of the product.
First of all, an electric razor is not magical. The way it works, the whiskers of your beard and moustache need to actually fit through the tiny holes of the foil, so the blade inside can cut them. If your whiskers are more than 1mm or so in length, the hair will bend and the foil will simply glide right over them and they won’t be cut. The electric razor does NOT shave long hair. It shaves 5 o’clock shadow.
Naturally, you then ask, “Why use an electric at all? What is the point?”
Well, there is a different process involved than a standard blade. You don’t just wipe it over your face and get a smooth shave. That little “beard trimmer” is not an afterthought – it’s an integral part of your shaving. That is why the trimmer is there. You use the trimmer to give yourself “5 o’clock shadow” and make sure all the hairs on your face are already incredibly short. After that, you use the foil and do the actual “shaving” of the hair.
The results are incredible. Saying an electric shaves closer than a standard blade is not marketing hype. It really is true. I’m completely blown away by the results. My face is so darned smooth it feels like I’m 13 again! Freaky.
I’ve read many reviews where people are not happy with this razor (or with some other electrics) and complain that it misses spots or doesn’t shave very close. There could be 2 reasons for this:
#1 – They don’t know the proper way to use an electric, so they never use the trimmer and they try to shave hair that is too long.
#2 – Their hair is very curly and grows in such a way that it won’t fit through the holes in the foil.
Therefore, before purchasing an electric, it is very important to note – due to the way ones hair grows and the way an electric operates, there is a chance that an electric razor might not be as effective for some individuals. Also, make sure you actually use the proper technique to shave. Use the trimmer first. Get your face down to a 5 o’clock shadow and THEN shave with the foil. Makes all the difference in the world.
I am thrilled that I did not go and buy some $200 shaver instead. The fact that this thing works so incredibly well and was under $40 is really fantastic. Unless the $200 shaver includes a supermodel to come over and shave my face for me, I don’t see the point in spending more money.
On the downside – yes, sometimes it misses a spot and you have to go over it again. However, I have discovered that 95% of the time, it is because the hair is too long. Once I give the area a quick once-over with the trimmer, the foil shaves it on the first pass. No problem.
On a side note – William’s Lectric Shave – junk. For me anyway. Doesn’t work at all. For other people, it might be a big help. But for me, I get just as good a shave when I shave dry. Again, body variations (in this case, body chemistry) will likely play a factor in how effective the product happens to be.

I found this razor to be the best one I have ever used! Having sufferd from the “Fred Flintson Effect”(i.e. perminate 5′0clock shadow) all of my life, I have always found it hard to get a close shave, and would always end up with razor burn and having to shave twice a day. WIth this razor, and a little effort, I get a really close, smooth shave which last the day! The charge is quick and last a long time. It is easy to clean, so you constintly get a better shave. FOR THE PRICE and all around quality, you can’t beat this razor!
